Masonic Observations

I'm a Blue Lodge Fundamentalist

August 02, 2012 1 Comment

Bro. Chris Hodapp has a new poll at his Freemasons for Dummies blog asking Masons if there is just ONE appendant group that they could join, what would it be?

A tough question especially that most Masons are interested in joining both of the most well known appendant bodies- the York Rite, and the Scottish Rite. But in this poll scenario, there could only be one.

Anyway, I am one of those Masons which some may refer to as "esoterically inclined". I enjoy researching the works of Manly P. Hall and Albert Pike and because of that inclination, I'm kind of leaning towards joining the Scottish Rite.

But then again, knowing that there is no higher degree than the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason (aka the 3rd Degree), I find myself questioning my desire to gain more degrees beyond the Third.

So I guess I'll pass on this poll for now, but in 2 years, if my Lodge will have me, I will serve as the Master. And when my term is over, maybe I'll think about joining the "higher" bodies. But for now, I'm happy with my position as a self-fashioned Blue Lodge Fundamentalist.

I'm not very good with words so from time to time I like to express my thoughts through art such as this one. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Philosophia et Scientia

May 25, 2012

The ability to split the atom has been one of mankind's greatest achievements. And those who are following the exploits of our great scientists and technicians from all over the world already know that just less than a month ago, physicists from the University of Zurich have discovered a previously unknown particle composed of three quarks in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator. I wonder what other particles are hiding behind these particles that was just discovered, and what other particles are hiding behind the particles that are yet to be discovered. What would be the implications of these discoveries to Earth’s population at large? Will there be a paradigm shift? Will it change the way we look at ourselves and the way we treat our neighbor? Can it make us stop killing each other in the name of religion, political ideologies, and the color of our skin? Or are we just discovering a new kind of atomic bomb, another tool to annihilate ourselves. "Veil upon veil they look, but veil upon veil they find." says Buddha as paraphrased by the late Manly P. Hall, a 33rd Degree Freemason. Can we really find our divinity by endlessly trying to discover the hidden mysteries of nature and science? Or should we just stop and settle our differences first before we journey into the unknown as one. But how?

The number of the Beast. The number of a Man.

May 24, 2012

Carbon Atom 666Could it be possible that the Book of Revelations is referring to the code of carbon based (aka material) life?

First let's consider a few words from the Holy Scripture: "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the NUMBER OF THE BEAST: for it is the NUMBER OF A MAN, and his number is SIX HUNDRED THREESCORE AND SIX." ~ Revelation 13:18

Now let's consider this basic scientific fact: "CARBON forms the backbone of biology for ALL OF LIFE on Earth." ~ Wikipedia / etc.

Let's take a closer look at this backbone of biology --> There are 6 protons, 6 electrons, and 6 neutrons in the carbon atom. Six hundred threescore and six. 666.

A Brother told me that this idea is not far off, keeping in mind that many of our world's religions and cultures think of the material world as evil. Therefore, the "beast" could refer to our material and physical desires- passions that must be kept within due bounds with the help of the compass.

Could this be just another coincidence? Or is it possible that the things that we're just beginning to comprehend have been known to the ancients? Maybe so, or maybe this is just another one of my silly musings.

The Old Master's Wages

March 15, 2012

I met a dear old man today
Who wore a Masonic pin.
It was old and faded like the man
Its edges were worn quite thin

I approached the park bench where he sat
To give the old brother his due
I said, "I see you've traveled east."
He said, "I have, have you?"

I said, "I have and in my day
Before the all seeing sun
I played in the rubble of Jubala
Jubilo, and Jubalum."

He shouted, "Don't laugh at the work my son.
It's good and sweet and true.
And if you've traveled as you have said
You should give these things a due.

"The word, the sign, the token,
The sweet Masonic prayer,
The vow that all have taken
Who have climbed the inner stair.

"The wages of a Mason
are never paid in gold.
But the gain comes from contentment
when you're weak and growing old.

"You see I've carried my obligation
for almost fifty years.
It has helped me through the hardships
and the failures full of tears.

"Now I'm losing my mind and my body.
Death is near but I don't despair.
I've lived my life upon the level
And I'm dying upon the square."

Sometimes the greatest lessons
Are those that are learned anew
And the old man in the park today
has changed my point of view.

To all Masonic Brothers
The only secret is to care.
May you live upon the level.
May you part upon the square.

Steve Wozniak

Best known as: Co-founder of Apple Computers
Initiated: 1980
Member of: Charity Lodge No. 362, Campbell, CA
Quotable Quote: "You have to think offensively and defensively and see where your opponent is going to go. Your mind has to be totally aware of the whole situation. That doesn't come the first time you play.”

The Ringling Bros

Best known as: Entertainers
Initiated, Passed, and Raised: All of them between 1890-1891
Member of: Baraboo Lodge No. 34, WI

Eddie Murphy (Confirmed- not a Freemason. Confused with Audie Murphy who is a war hero and also an actor)

Best known as: A comedian
Initiated: Unknown
Member of: North Hollywood Lodge No. 542, CA (see note below)
Quotable Quote: “In reality, all men are sculptors, constantly chipping away the unwanted parts of their lives trying to create a masterpiece.”
Note: Though Eddie Murphy is listed as a Freemason in numerous Masonic websites (including Wikipedia's list of Famous Freemasons). I couldn't find any record of the date when he was Initiated, Passed, and Raised. I also wonder if some people have just confused him with Freemason Audie Murphy (1924-1971) of Hollywood Lodge No. 542, CA.
EDIT (June 25, 2012): Bro. Jeff M., a member of North Hollywood Lodge No. 542 and Ken Butters confirmed that I (and wikipedia) have confused Audie Murphy with Eddie Murphy. Audie Murphy and not Eddie Murphy is a member of North Hollywood Lodge No. 542 where they have a special room dedicated in his memory.

John Molson

Best known as: Founder of Molson Breweries
Initiated: Date unknown but he is known to have served as the Worshipful Master of St. Paul's Lodge from June to December 1791 and from June 1795 to June 1796.

We Do! We Do!

February 01, 2012

Brethren who are fans of The Simpson's show can definitely sing along to The Stonecutter's Song- but read the lyrics below 'til the end because it looks like somebody is trying to add a very sinister twist to this tongue-in-cheek jingle that we all have grown to love.

Who controls the British crown?
Who keeps the metric system down?
We do! We do!
Who leaves Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do! We do!
Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Gutenberg a star?
We do! We do!
Who robs cave fish of their sight?
Who rigs every Oscar night?
We do! We do!

And who makes some Catholic Priests commit scandalous sex crimes?
Well, according to a Yale University teaching assistant, WE DO!

The Stonecutter's Song
