Description and Symbols
The five-pointed star or Sacred Pentagram in the middle of the Masonic Square and Compasses represents several things. According to Albert Pike, "The Blazing Star or Glory in the centre refers us to that Grand Luminary the Sun, which enlightens the Earth, and by its genial influence dispenses blessings to mankind." The Masonic scholar Rex Hutchins asserts that the Pentagram is the symbol of the Divine in man... The five-pointed star with a single point upward represents the Divine. It also symbolizes man for its five points allude to the five senses, the five members (head, arms and legs) and is five fingers on each hand, which signify the tokens that distinguish Masons. According to the ancient Philosopher Iamblichus, the five-poited star was the Pythagorean sign of recognition and held sacred as a symbol of divine perfection.
The Seven Stars with one of their points pointing inwards represent the Seven Liberal Arts and Sciences that is meant to adorn the mind of the inward man. Every Fellowcraft Mason learns of the importance of the liberal arts and sciences. They were believed to be the sum total of all knowledge that was worth while to a complete education.
The words This We'll Defend is the official motto of the US Army. Each word is meaningful. "This" refers to the land and the ideals of the people. "We'll" references the army's collective team effort, and "Defend" refers to the primary function of the army as a defender and not an aggressor against others.
The Circumpunct or the circled dot (look closely, it's the dot in the middle of the seal) is an ancient symbol that can represent the sun or the solar system. According to Manly P. Hall on his Lectures on Ancient Philosophy, “The most primitive and fundamental of all symbols is the dot.”
The Radial Grid Lines. According to Manly P. Hall, "The keys to all knowledge are contained in the dot, the line, and the circle. The dot is universal consciousness, the line is universal intelligence, and the circle is universal force – the threefold, unknowable Cause of all knowable existence (the three hypostases of Atma). In man the spirit is represented by the dot and conscious activity or intelligence by the line. Conscious activity is the key to intelligence, because consciousness belongs to the sphere of the dot and activity to the sphere of the circle. The center and the circumference are thus blended in the connecting line – conscious activity or intelligence. The circle is the symbol of body and body is the limit of the radius of the activity of mind power pouring out of the substance of consciousness."
